A DBT skill to quickly de-escalate emotional distress.
Temperature
Splash your face with cold water or hold a cold pack to your cheeks and forehead for 30 seconds. This triggers the dive reflex, which quickly lowers your heart rate.
Intense Exercise
Engage in a brief period of intense exercise, like running in place or doing jumping jacks for a minute. This helps your body use up the stored energy from distress.
Paced Breathing & Paired Muscle Relaxation
Slow your breathing down. Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 6, and breathe out for 8. While you do this, tense and then relax your body's muscle groups one by one.
